Athough this installation was inspired by a real, tragic event, my intent was not just to simulate a death, but to
encourage reflection on how we approach and perceive death; particularly in western culture.
The cloth wraps covering the mesh body as well as the jars containing 'parts' allude to mummification. Overlapping that,
the detatched, 'clinical' look of a modern autopsy -- a disassociative approach to 'modern' death vs. the ancient practice
of ritual and preparation.
The person is now only a body; reduced to parts (grainy black and white photos in sealed jars) which are examined to understand
the means of death, rather than the life lived. The parts are disposable; the ulitimate destination the crude recepticle
of a garbage can.
